Understanding The Facts About Defective Drug Recalls
One study conducted by Reuters that looked at drug recalls and notifications from the FDA uncovered some frightening statistics. Researchers looked at recalls from 2004 to 2011. During that span, the FDA recalled 1,700 drugs, 91 of which were considered Class I. This means 91 drugs could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.” Moreover, the study found that, of those 91 Class I drug recalls, only 55 were announced through the FDA’s recall alert system. That equates to about one in five going unreported.
