International Custody And Your Parental Rights

The most frightening aspect of any family law battle is the chance that you could lose contact with your child. There is no replacement for the time you spend with your child growing up.

If your spouse has threatened to leave the country with your child, you cannot hesitate to get legal representation. Do not compromise the caliber of experience you need when you choose an attorney for these important matters.

Contact our firm today to arrange a consultation and learn about your options in international custody, family abduction and parental kidnapping matters. We have offices conveniently located in Pearland, Angleton and Houston, Texas.

An Attorney Who Can Get Results In International Custody

Scott M. Brown & Associates is dedicated to helping preserve important family relationships in times of transition. In amicable proceedings, this means listening to the other side, protecting our clients’ rights and negotiating a plan that works for everyone. International custody issues, however, are rarely amicable. Emotions run high, arguments get heated and children are too often used as pawns or bargaining chips.

We can help you take back control of your custody dispute and work tirelessly to make sure your international custody matter is handled in your and your child’s best interests. We have a team of talented litigators with about 40 years of combined experience devoted to family law who have helped us achieve favorable results in international custody matters for clients throughout the Houston area, Texas and the United States.

Family Abduction Outside Of The Hague Convention

The biggest challenge of international custody is jurisdiction. Which country has governance over the custody matter in question? Fortunately, in 1980, the United States entered into an international treaty known as the Hague Convention (1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction). This treaty provides a civil mechanism to resolve international child custody matters and ensure a child’s safe return to his or her country of habitual residence.

Due to Texas’ proximity to the southern U.S. border, we often work with clients whose former spouses have threatened to take their children to Latin American countries. We also deal with uniquely challenging cases in which a parent from a country that is not a signatory to the Hague Convention threatens to leave or has already left with a child.
