League City Drug Distribution Charges

Experienced League City Lawyers Providing Drug Charge Defense

Drugs seem to be more decriminalized than ever, but some states are still fairly strict when it comes to drug laws. That’s because drug addiction is still a serious problem in our society. In 2015, drug overdose deaths exceeded 50,000, making it the highest number ever. These high numbers are driven by an increase in the abuse of heroin and prescription drugs.

Texas is one state that has strict drug distribution laws. The state has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drugs. There are minimum and maximum sentences that apply under the Texas Controlled Substances Act, the Texas Penal Code and the Health and Safety Code. If a person is under age 21, the penalties are much harsher.

The penalties can ruin your life forever, so don’t handle your drug case alone. Contact the League City criminal defense lawyers at Scott M. Brown & Associates to get the legal help you need and hopefully reduce your charges.

Categories of Drugs

There are five drug penalty groups in Texas:

  1. Penalty Group 1: This group includes cocaine and methamphetamine as well as hallucinogens such as LSD. Opioids such as codeine and other painkillers are also included in this group.

  2. Penalty Group 2: This group includes PCP, ecstasy and hashish.

  3. Penalty Group 3: This group includes opiates and opioids, sedatives, benzodiazepines and other stimulants and depressants.

  4. Penalty Group 4: This group includes opiates and opioids not classified under the penalty groups above, as well as narcotics and other addictive prescription drugs that have a high potential for abuse.

  5. Marijuana Group: This group includes marijuana and synthetic marijuana such as Spice and K2.
